“The data says what the data says.” — probably not Martin Luther.

Sola Data imagines the Reformer confronting a modern laptop with the same skeptical expression you might wear when somebody’s conclusions seem suspiciously convenient. An old printing press delivers its instructions: replicate, preregister, publish, correct. Books on logic, science, history, and Scripture share the desk with a reminder to check the presuppositions—and a crumpled protest: “But that’s not the result I wanted.”

The title borrows the language of the Reformation for a little historical mischief. Luther didn’t have a laptop, and this certainly isn’t a newly discovered quotation. The joke takes aim at our habit of demanding evidence right up until the evidence becomes inconvenient.

I wanted something for people who enjoy theology, science, history, and asking awkward questions. Examine the assumptions, test the claims, and be willing to correct yourself. A preferred conclusion is a poor substitute for an honest answer, however impressive the machinery that produced it.
