God’s Word does more than describe life. Through Him, all things were made.

Living Word follows a flowing ribbon of manuscript through a landscape of creation, daily labor, and mercy. It takes the shapes of a wounded hand and foot before approaching the cross, where the parchment becomes the pure white cloth draped over the crossmember. The ribbon and cloth are one continuous form: the Word through whom all things were made is the same Christ who became flesh and gave Himself for us.

The illustration accompanies the observation, “His words are not dead words—they are living creatures, with hands and feet.” Frequently attributed to Martin Luther, the quotation’s authorship is uncertain. Isaiah 55:10–11 supplies the Biblical foundation: God’s Word accomplishes the purpose for which He sends it. A Hebrew fragment on the ribbon approaching the cross echoes His promise: “So shall My word be that goes out from My mouth.”

I wanted the scene to invite a closer look. Creation, work, compassion, and the cross belong within the same unfolding picture. The written Word bears witness to the living Word, Jesus Christ, who became flesh and dwelt among us. The wounds identify Him; the white cloth points to His righteousness and His completed saving work. Our hope rests in the One who speaks, acts, and keeps His promises.
