Apparently, having an explanation for everything isn’t the same as understanding it.

Riddles of God pairs G. K. Chesterton’s observation, “The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man,” with a scene inspired by the book of Job. Job's "friends" crowd around an elaborate contraption providing an “Explanation,” while Job faces a sweeping vision of stars, mountains, and the restless sea and Elihu just begins to notice. Their Rube Goldberg inspired answer machinery looks impressive while it solves nothing. Creation is considerably more impressive and efficient.

The back brings God’s own question into focus with Job 38:4–5: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” The One who made and sustains creation calls human certainty to account.

I wanted the humor to catch our habit of confusing a tidy and often misguided answer with the whole truth. Job’s suffering exposes how badly confident explanations can fail the person who is hurting. God’s wisdom reaches beyond what we can measure, explain, or fit into a comfortable theory—and we can trust Him even when we cannot explain what He is doing.
