Who Justifies Me? Sweatshirt
Our criminal records won’t save us. In God's eyes we all have criminal records deserving of death. Thankfully, our works don't receive the justice they deserve. We receive mercy through the sacrifice of Christ instead.
Who Justifies Me? brings the accusation into a heavenly courtroom. The devil presents a long list of sins while Christ stands in our place before the Judge. Above the vintage illustration, the challenge reads: “Ask about my record. Then ask who justifies me.” Romans 8:33–34 supplies the answer: “It is God who justifies.” Our confidence rests in the One who answers for us, not in our ability to explain away the charges.
The back moves from the courtroom to a personal scene of mercy: Christ receives a kneeling sinner beneath the confession, “Yes. I am a deplorable sinner.” The answer follows: “But in His mercy, Christ took my place.” These words of Martin Luther from his commentary on Galatians summarize that exchange: Christ takes our sins, and we receive His holiness through faith.
I wanted this design to hold an honest confession and a confident assurance together. We do not need to pretend our sins are harmless or our record is clean. Christ knows exactly whom He came to save. His death and resurrection give us something stronger than excuses, comparisons, or promises to do better. The accuser has plenty to talk about. He does not get to make the final judgment.
