Going with the flow isn’t necessarily a sign of life.

Swimming Upstream pairs G. K. Chesterton’s observation, “A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it,” with a trout driving against the current. Fallen leaves and broken branches drift downstream while the living fish pushes through the rapids, framed by a rugged mountain river in a vintage illustration style.

Romans 6:11 gives the scene its deeper meaning: “Dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” The Christian life begins with what Christ has done for us. The life He freely gives graciously changes our relationship to the current that once carried us along. We are in the World, it affects us, but because His Spirit dwells within us we have the strength needed to fight the current.

I wanted the contrast to be simple enough to see at a glance and worth thinking about afterward. Following the crowd requires very little examination of where it is headed. Faithfulness sometimes means resisting what everyone else takes for granted, trusting God’s Word even when the current runs hard against it. We swim because we have been given life, and that in abundance.
