The relationship between good works, salvation, and the Christian life has been debated since the earliest days of the Church. Do we need to do good works to BE saved? Do we do good works BECAUSE we are saved? I think Paul makes it clear when he says that we have been saved to do the good works God has prepared for us; or as Luther said, “God does not need your good works. But your neighbor does.”

What Are Works For places the cross at the center of two connected scenes. On one side, a man kneels with empty, open hands. On the other, a man reaches down to help someone in need. The vintage woodcut illustration, accented by a red cloth draped over the cross, puts the relationship between faith and good works into view.

We come before God with nothing that can purchase His favor. Christ has accomplished our salvation, and we receive His gifts through faith. Our neighbor, meanwhile, may need a meal, a helping hand, a listening ear, or someone willing to show up. Good works are a response to our Salvation, a part of our Sanctification. They do not save, but they serve a noble purpose.

I wanted this design to give a simple answer to a question we often complicate. We are saved by grace, and that grace frees us to serve. The hands that receive God’s mercy can reach out with mercy to someone else. Your neighbor’s needs are the best place to start.
